چکیده

Vector-boson pair production is an important background for Higgs boson and new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. We have calculated the loop-induced gluon-fusion process gg → WW → leptons, allowing for arbitrary invariant masses of the intermediate W bosons. This process contributes at O(αs ) relative to quarkantiquark annihilation, but its importance is enhanced by the large gluon flux at the LHC and by experimental cuts employed in Higgs boson searches. We find that gg → WW provides only a moderate correction (ca. 5%) to the inclusive W -pair production cross section at the LHC. However, after taking into account realistic experimental cuts, the gluon-fusion process becomes significant and increases the theoretical WW background estimate for Higgs searches in the pp → H → WW → leptons channel by approximately 30%.

Gluon-induced W -boson pair production at the LHC

Pair production of W bosons constitutes an important background to Higgs boson and new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. We have calculated the loop-induced gluon-fusion process gg → W W ∗ → leptons, including intermediate light and heavy quarks and allowing for arbitrary invariant masses of the W bosons. While formally of next-to-next-to-leading order, the gg → W W ∗ → leptons...

searches in gluon fusion at the LHC

WW/ZZ interference for Higgs signal and continuum background as well as signal-background interference is studied for same-flavour lν̄ll̄νl final states produced in gluon-gluon scattering at the LHC for light and heavy Higgs masses with minimal and realistic experimental selection cuts. For the signal cross section, we find WW/ZZ interference effects of O(5%) at MH = 126 GeV. For MH ≥ 200 GeV, we...

The process gg → WW as a background to the Higgs signal at the LHC

The production of W pairs from the one-loop gluon fusion process is studied. Formulas are presented for the helicity amplitudes keeping the top mass finite, but all other quark masses zero. The correlations among the leptons coming from the W bosons are kept. The contribution of this background to the Higgs boson search in the WW decay mode at the LHC is estimated by applying the cuts foreseen ...

Could the excess seen at 124-126 GeV be due to the Randall-Sundrum radion?

Current Higgs boson searches in various channels at the LHC point to an excess at around 124-126 GeV due to a possibly standard-model-like Higgs boson. If one examines more closely the channels (γγ, WW(*), and ZZ(*)) that have excess, this "Higgs boson" may be the Randall-Sundrum radion ϕ. Because of the trace anomaly, the radion has stronger couplings to the photon and gluon pairs. Thus, it wi...

Theoretical Status of Higgs Production at Hadron Colliders in the Standard Model

The search for the Higgs boson, the last missing particle in the Standard Model (SM) responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking, is a primary goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and is a central part of Fermilab’s Tevatron program. In the Standard Model, mass generation is triggered by the Higgs mechanism, which predicts the existence of one scalar particle, the Higgs boson [1]...
